How can I avoid redness or irritation after shaving?

Published on 20 March 2024
While a Philips electric shaver is designed to be kind to your skin, there are several things you can do to help reduce the risk of red or irritated skin after shaving.

To minimize the risk of razor burn, Philips recommends shaving dry with your electric shaver. This means without using gel or foam and with a clean and fully dry face. This allows your shaver to glide smoothly across your skin. Additionally, avoid shaving before a workout, because sweat can cause freshly shaved skin to redden.

If you haven't shaved for three days or longer, pre-trim the longer hairs with a beard trimmer for best results.

As you shave, move the shaver in circles while applying gentle pressure to keep the shaving heads in contact with your skin. Avoid pressing too hard. Using this technique means you won’t have to go over the same skin repeatedly, reducing the chance of redness.

When you’re done shaving, applying a light after-shave balm or moisturizer is a good way to freshen your skin.

If you're new to shaving with an electric shaver or are switching from using a different type of shaver, it can take some time for your skin to adapt. Philips recommends using your shaver regularly for 21 days to allow your skin to get used to the new way of shaving.
